Weerts decided to document old gymnasiums, which he has seen torn down,
to capture the distinct style and character newer gymnasiums lack. Weerts
was challenged by his project to find gymnasiums that were unique and
not yet torn down. He had to travel numerous miles to achieve this.
Weerts love for meeting new people and seeing different places has
allowed him to be influenced by them. This is probably what gave Weerts
his biggest gain from his project: making connections with individuals
who had fascinating stories to tell about when they played ball in the
gymnasiums he was photographing.
