Is John Berger correct when he writes, “The pet offers its owner a mirror to a part that is otherwise never reflected?” Most everyone has a passion for dogs, but Mindy Niemela took it a step further and chose them for her documentary story. Her first approach was photographing dogs and their roles in the community. She met police dogs, dogs who visited nursing homes and seeing eye dogs. But the first photographs she brought back inspired her to take a new direction. She found that the most intriguing images were those which showed the personality of individual dogs. From a doggy daycare center to a visit to a veterinarian, her images personify the lives of these dogs.
